WHY THE PHONETICS?
When someone tries to speak Spanish, and the waiter responds back to them in English, they’re confused as to why! This is because a lot of English people speak Spanish using the English mouth movements and alphabet, so of course, their accent sounds English and is difficult to understand. Using the phonetics bypasses this problem and helps encourage your mouth to move in the Spanish pronunciation way. This is one reason why using the phonetics feels so strange at first because people aren't used to their mouth moving in this way.
Although Spanish and English share the same alphabet the letters are NOT pronounced the same. The vowels especially highlight this!
Vowels in English...
A “eyh”, E “ee”, I “eye”, O “owh”, U “you”
Vowels in Spanish...
A “ah”, E “eh”, I “ee”, O “oh”, U “oo”
By learning through the phonetics, you don’t have to learn all the Spanish pronunciation rules that you would need to know to be able to read and write . For example, ‘ll’ is pronounced “y”, ‘v’ is pronounced “b”, ‘z’ is pronounced “th” and so on. It’s as simple as we learnt to speak when we were 2 years old, but didn’t start to learn to read or write until we were 5. We’re taking this approach towards learning Spanish, as after all speaking is the MOST IMPORTANT THING when learning a language!
Our activity booklets teach you 75 words in around 75 minutes. Retain your knowledge and check you’re pronouncing the words correctly with our easy-to-use app.
